Tutkin väitöskirjassani mm. HB-kuvioksi (haut: korkea; bas: matala) kutsuttua intonaatiokuviota. Kyseinen intonaatiokuvio koostuu karkeasti sanottuna intonaation noususta ja sitä välittömästi seuraavasta laskusta. Kuvio ilmaisee puheessa tietyn rakenteellisen ja temaattisen yksikön päättymistä. Ilmiön tehtävät ovat kuitenkin hieman erilaiset riippuen siitä, onko intonaation lasku suurempi (ns. “vahva variantti”) vai pienempi (ns. “heikko variantti”) kuin sitä edeltävä nousu. Tutkimusteni mukaan muodoltaan vastaavanlaisella nuottikuviolla on samankaltaisia tehtäviä klassisessa pianomusiikissa.

JOHTOPÄÄTÖKSENI AIHEESTA:

“Certain prosodic and musical features thus seem to be comparable in some respects with regard to their acoustic forms as well as concerning the structural contexts they typically occur in. Both in the corpora of French speech and in the scores of classical piano music that I have studied, the so called “figure H-B” systematically seems to be associated with structural articulation points and to carry certain structural implications with regard to what will follow. Roughly, the “figure H-B” consists of a remarkable melodic rise immediately followed by a melodic fall, and the phenomenon has two different variants according to the depth of the melodic fall: in the case of the “strong variant”, the melodic fall is larger than the preceding rise, whereas in the occurrences of the “weak variant”, the melody stays at the end on a higher level than where it was before the rise. In addition to their slightly different acoustic forms, the functions of the two variants are also somewhat different: where the “strong variant” typically occurs at the end of an autonomous structural and thematic unit, the “weak variant” normally marks the end of a structurally and / or thematically dependent division of speech or music within a larger whole.” (Lehtinen 2008b: 171)
